‘This is Lorelei’ releases second Deluxe version, featuring MJ Lenderman, Momma, Waxahatchee, and others

In perhaps a half-contrast to the twangy pop featured in the original ‘Box for Buddy, Box for Star’, many of the tracks on the second (yes, second!) deluxe addition have a down-to-earth indie-twang direction captained by many of the most prominent figures in this sub-genre. You have beautiful renditions that completely flip the script to the original songs, but retain the original’s sense of self.

Somewhere along the way, prior to this release, I had heard MJ Lenderman’s version of ‘Dancing in the Club’ on the last, albeit smaller, deluxe version, which instantly became a classic for him as the lyrics and rhythm suited his style very well. That’s a note to take regarding the entire deluxe album; these aren’t just features, and they aren’t necessarily simply covers either. The artists have taken these songs as if they were written just for them and have crafted some beautiful, entirely new versions.

Waxahatchee has been busy. Featured on a plethora of projects that have graced my ears in recent months, I’m glad she had time to take on ‘Where’s Your Love Now’. Compared to the boom-bap lo-fi toyish sounds of the original (which was quite unique and special), this version leans into a soft-rock americana stance.

Other big names include Snail Mail and Momma, who have both released incredible albums of their own within the past year. Their tracks, ‘Two Legs’ and ‘A Song That Sings About You’ respectively, have become some of the catchiest to come from this record. ‘Two Legs’ matches closely to the sonic and emotional vibe of the original album but in a charming way that only Snail Mail could lay down.

While some could argue this album probably didn’t need a second deluxe edition, I believe the many extras are absolutely necessary. The groups covering these already beloved songs are well known and staples of the indie scene, adding much love to every track included here.

Pre-order the LP and keep up with the latest from Lorelei here, or stream the new release here. Thanks for reading!
